Mission Statement
The Fort St. John Women's Resource Society is committed to promoting equality and well-being to the women of this community through education, advocacy and social justice.
Our History
In 1981, a group of women in the Fort St. John area began to organize a Women's Centre. They were concerned about the lack of resources and choices available to women in the North and the overall absence of an effective method of organizing change for women. Many women in the area expressed a need for a place to gather in order to challenge their isolation and effectively adapt to our northern conditions...to face their transitions clearly.
The Fort St. John Women's Resource Centre Society was born out of these needs. The initial group formed a non-profit society with a constitution. They applied for and received an operational grant (core funding) form the Secretary of State Women's Programs.
Our accomplishments range from building a 12-Unit women's shelter to creating the first teen-mother's day care facility.
